Adolescents in urban settings are frequently referred to School Counselors by parents and teachers because they are "angry." Often, anger is a child's controllable symptom of other feelings such as shame, embarrassment, frustration, loss or trauma. School counselors have the unique opportunity to explore anger and its underlying feelings with students individually and in group settings. This presentation will focus on how School Counselors in urban settings can work with students to explore and normalize their feelings around anger, help students and parents to work together to talk about feelings, and provide teachers with support around students that display anger in the classroom.
